Skating Rogerstone to Crosskeys (Newport)

The canal path that runs through the old locks is ideal for outdoor skating that’s suitable for both quads and inline skates alike.

A central point is the Fourteen Locks Canal Centre that has ample parking for visitors and a nice café serving hot and cold food. A great meeting place to start your journey.

Heading North on the canal, the pathways are all smooth tarmac that run from Rogerstone to Crosskeys and beyond with three quiiet road crossings to pass over, to continue skating.

As you leave the Risca section there is a ramp which can be approached by braking or walking on the grass verge to the side, slowing you down to cross over. You’ll then continue on the tarmac path following the canal.

If you go South from the picnic centre, the path is a little more demanding where it drops through levels that would have been the old locks. This route divides further down and one path leads to Barrack Hill whilst the other takes you through Bettws and Malpas before moving towards Cwmbran.

A great path to try out your outdoor skills which is virtually all flat. Even if don’t skate the whole route, it’s a great place to get the feeling for skating outdoors as the paths are long, smooth and very few cyclists or joggers.

A tranquil pathway suitable for all ages and abilities.
